The sun made a welcome appearance as the teams arrived in Redditch City Centre for the opening round of the 2017 Tour Series.
Split into two parts, the day kicked off with a team time trial in the afternoon followed by the main event, an evening criterium.
First up, it was the TT, which took in two laps of the 1.4km circuit. ONE Pro Cycling were the second team to roll out taking the lead in a time of 3’57”198 but it wasn’t fast enough to maintain the top spot on the leaderboard and throughout the course of the afternoon the team saw themselves slip into fourth place in the final result.
Aiming to come back fighting in the evening criterium, the five man squad rolled out at 7.30pm for one hour and five laps of intensive racing, as thousands of spectators lined the course cheering on the fast paced peloton.
ONE Pro Cycling showed a lot of promise throughout the crit, maintaining a presence at the front of the bunch, covering attacks and animating the race in their attempt to create a vital breakaway. In the closing stages of the race, the tempo continued to increase, with the peloton merging together as the bell rung loudly signalling the last lap.
A long drag before the finish was enough to split the main contenders from the front of the bunch and as the team failed to organise themselves, Chris Opie of Bike Channel Canyon sprinted to victory with Tom Stewart first home for ONE Pro Cycling, crossing the line in 6th place.
A disappointing start to the Tour Series leaves the team hungry to redeem themselves and the results necessary to fight for the coveted Tour Series title.
Next up, the team make their way to Stoke for Round Two which is sure to provide every bit as much buzz and entertainment as the opening round.
