Latvian sprinter Emils Liepins joins ONE Pro Cycling having spent the last part of the season as a trainee with Pro Continental team Delko Marseille Provence KTM. With 13 UCI podiums to his name throughout the 2017 season, Liepins has enjoyed a successful year. The 25 year old sprinter will be no stranger to the UK having raced the Rutland – Melton Classic several times with his team Rietumu Banka – Riga and will be aiming to make a big impact on the British scene.
Welcome to the team Emils, we’re looking forward to seeing you in ONE Pro team colours. Tell us a little bit about your background in cycling and what attracted you to the sport?
“I loved BMX when I was a kid, my Dad was into cycling as well and he used to spend a lot of time taking me to the BMX track but after a while it got very expensive, as our nearest track was in another city. So I had to start next best alternative, which was road cycling. I started racing with my local club Dobele when I was nine years old and I haven’t looked back.
Since my time with Dobele, I’ve raced for the Latvian National team as a junior and U23, the rest of my cycling career, so far, has been spent in Latvian Continental teams Rietumu Banka – Riga and Alpha Baltic. I have a lot of great memories but my favourite are of the time spent with my local club. They introduced me to road racing and I’m very thankful for it.”
Why do you love cycling? What makes you so passionate?
“I love cycling because it gives me an adrenaline rush, especially when there are big sprints involved. I love the fact I get to travel and see the world and meet new and interesting people, It’s hard to imagine a better job.”
What attracted you to ONE Pro Cycling and who are you most looking forward to working with?
“I first met ONE Pro Cycling in 2016 when I raced in Great Britain for the first time. A really organised and professional team, I’m excited to be on board and can’t wait to see what the 2018 season has in store. I don’t really know anyone from ONE Pro Cycling in person as yet but I’m looking forward to meeting and working with all the staff and riders in the next few months and throughout the 2018 season.”
How would you describe yourself as a rider?
“I would describe myself as a sprinter. I love big field sprints and the adrenaline buzz you get at the end of a race when you surge to the line. If you’re lucky enough to be sprinting from a small selection it’s an even better feeling.”
Finally, what are your aims and ambitions for the 2018 season?
“I was on the podium 13 times in 2017 but unfortunately I wasn’t lucky enough to take the top step. So my goal for 2018 is ambitious but very simple, I want to turn these podium positions into victories with ONE Pro Cycling.”
